The sequel to Nexus 6 will likely not come from China after all as rumours came out this week and pointed to Nexus 4 and 5 maker LG from South Korea as Google partner for the 2015 Nexus smartphone project. And the most solid candidate to become the next Nexus base-model is the upcoming LG flagship – the LG G4.
Belying the earlier speculations that Huawei from China will take over the Nexus phone manufacturing duties from Motorola, local reports from the Korean peninsula have indicated that the coveted Google project will make a return. LG will reprise its relatively successful stint as assembler of the Nexus 4 and 5, according to G4Games.
The tech blog site pointed to Korean-language news site eToday as source. There was no mention in the same news story on the exact branding of the upcoming device and when its release date will be. But the report has hinted that Google’s new Nexus project is already underway and is being referred internally as N000.
The best evidence offered by the report that supports LG’s regaining of the Nexus label is the reported tour of Google engineers on LG’s manufacturing sites. Assumptions followed that the two companies are into something big, likely collaborating on an upcoming project.
LG G4 as the repurposed next Nexus phone
If it turned out that LG and Google will whip up the next Nexus phone, succeeding the Motorola Nexus 6, it is safe to assume that the former would be more than willing to use its 2015 flagship as template. In the past, LG modelled the Nexus 4 and 5 after its hero phones and the same thing should be expected.
The G4 becoming the Google signature phone should excite Android fans. According to 9to5Mac, the device is developing to be a worthy rival for industry leaders. Rumours say that it might take the name LG G4 Note, meaning it will be a gigantic handset that will take on current phablet leaders – the iPhone 6 Plus from Apple and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4.
Leaks also suggest that the LG G4 build will have touch of metals but it is doubtful if LG will follow Samsung’s move of transforming the Galaxy S6 into a premium-built phone that deviates from the earlier model. In any case, the G4 is overall a killer phone and like in previous practice its major features will be extended to the 2015 Nexus smartphone.
The LG G4, according to GSM Arena is set for a release date anytime in the second quarter of 2015. That should give Google and LG enough time to repurpose the smartphone and roll it out a few months after. The Nexus phone that is packed with vanilla Android normally arrives during the holiday quarter of the year.
