CrucialTec eyes fintech collaboration with Google, Alibaba, Microsoft.

Charles Ahn, the chief executive of fingerprint module maker CrucialTec, is certain that his firm’s business will grow exponentially this year.

He certainly had reasons to be confident during his interview with The Korea Herald earlier this month.

The Korean fingerprint module producer is anticipated to achieve a turnaround after suffering from three consecutive annual losses, and more than 10 business projects with global smartphone-makers to supply its fingerprint scanners, or biometric trackpads, this year are in the works.

“CrucialTec will not be just a manufacturer but a company that provides total biometric solutions from software and hardware to module packaging technologies,” Ahn said.

After its two biggest customers ― BlackBerry Ltd., formerly known as Research In Motion, and Taiwanese smartphone-maker HTC ― were outpaced by industry rivals, the Korean firm also stumbled, failing to secure new customers for its optical trackpads, or OTP, a small button-like optical mouse featured on BlackBerry smartphones.

The company, however, did not stop investing to seek new growth momentum, and has big hopes for its biometric trackpad.

“The biometric trackpad will allow the firm to take a big leap again after its success with the OTP,” the CEO said.

Ahn estimated that the market capitalization of the firm this year would exceed its record market cap of 700 billion won ($628 million), posted several years ago thanks to the robust growth of the OTP business.

Spearheading this year’s growth will be the firm’s patented technology that enables mobile users to scan their fingerprints on the bottom of smartphone screens. The so-called under-glass fingerprint scanner allows for fingerprint security without a home button installed with a sensor.

Smartphones embedded with under-glass fingerprint sensors are set to be rolled out as early as the first half of this year, according to the company.

CrucialTec has converted the production lines that used to roll out 10 million units of the OTP per month to ones for the BTP, so almost all the lines are now being used to churn out fingerprint sensors.

The sales coming from the BTP will likely account for almost 80 percent of the firm’s revenue this year.

With the door to the financial technology market flung open thanks to Apple’s online payment system Apple Pay, CrucialTec is riding the tide by working together with payment solution developer Danal.

“As a member of the FIDO Alliance, an industry consortium for standardization in authentication technology, CrucialTec will likely have an opportunity to increase its footing in the relevant fields and to further collaborate with other FIDO members including Google, Alibaba, PayPal and Microsoft,” the CEO said.

Alibaba teams up with Huawei to let Alipay Wallet users pay with just their fingerprint.

As Chinese internet giants are fighting to own people on mobile payment, Alibaba has announced a way to make its payments service Alipay even more secure on a smartphone — with the introduction of fingerprinting technology in a deal that it inked with smartphone manufacturer Huawei.

Alipay Wallet, the e-payment app relaunched last year to handle online-to-offline payments, will be integrated into Huawei’s soon-to-be-launched smartphone, the Mate 7, which boasts biometric security technology.
Other than a fingerprint reader, the technology includes encryption and authentication managed by Huawei. This means that instead of entering passwords and codes, all that users have to do now is swipe a digit to confirm payments for a variety of goods and services.
In a bid to reassure those concerned that even fingerprint readers can be hacked, Alipay notes that Huawei is providing what is known as “chip-level security” for the Mate 7, which means fingerprint data is saved and stored on the phone — but it is encrypted and can’t be accessed. Huawei is also going to use “high-level” encryption and verification to make sure only approved third-party apps like Alipay Wallet can access the fingerprint information for transactions.

There are no details on when the Mate 7 will be launched yet, and no indication on the pricing. However, with Alipay taking this step to assure its mobile users of the security (and convenience) of paying via its wallet app, it could very well kickstart the adoption of fingerprinting technology for payments in the world’s largest smartphone market.
Indeed, Alipay says that its partnership with Huawei will give it “a way to fast-track biometric payment technology in China.”
Alibaba has been increasing its focus on Alipay as it seeks to fend off the threat posed by Tencent’s e-commerce and mobile payment ambitions. Recently Alibaba even decided to push mobile shopping within Alipay Wallet by letting retailers create online storefronts in the app, in a bid to help accelerate its growth beyond the current 100 million users it has.

Alibaba ger sig in på mobilmarknaden.

Kinesiska näthandelsjätten Alibaba satsar på smarta mobiltelefoner. Företaget investerar nära fem miljarder kronor i startupbolaget Meizu.

Sammanlagt sålde företaget 1,5 miljoner telefoner i januari.

"AliPay to add support for the Galaxy S5 fingerprint payment authentication"
"With more then 550 million users and 8.5 million daily transactions, Chinese third-party online payment platform owned by ecommerce site Alibaba called AliPay will soon allow you to authenticate a transaction using the fingerprint scanner on the new Samsung Galaxy S5, according to a new report from Leiphone.
AliPay will add support in Q2 2014. The service allows you not only to make a payment but also lets consumers verify if they are happy with the product that they have bought before releasing money to the seller.
Alipay will become the second payment method that will add support for the Galaxy S5, after Paypal. According to sources, the system has been tested on many different devices among those the iPhone 5S, it is yet unclear if the iPhone will also get an app that allows you to authenticate a payment with your fingerprint. The Samsung Galaxy S5 will officially launch world wide on April 11th, 2014."
