China Mobile Is World Largest Carrier
Chinese manufacturers account for 40% of overall smartphone shipments in 2014, at least according to TrendForce’s report. This might give you an idea how big the Chinese market is, I’m not talking about all Asia here, just China. We knew that there were over a billion mobile phone users in China, but today we got some concrete information / stats, thanks to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and their latest report. Anyhow, let’s check out that report.
According to the report, there were 1.286 billion mobile phone users in China at the end of last month (December). What does this mean? Well, that means that 94.5% of China’s population actually used a mobile phone at the end of 2014. In comparison, only 18.3% of China’s population (249.43 million people) used a landline in that same period. Furthermore, the number of mobile phone users in China is growing at a rate of 4% per month, which comes to 4.64% annually.
485.26 million people were connected to the 3G signal in December, which comes to 37.73%. 875.22 million (68.05%) Chinese people used their handset to surf the internet and mobile internet consumption was 240,958 TB (Terabyte). As far as SMS goes, Chinese mobile phone users sent 65.15 billion text messages in December, which averages to 1.64 texts per phone (a day).
The next information might surprise you, China Mobile is world’s largest carrier, it has 90 million subscribers connected to 4G LTE service. They added 19 million 4G subscribers last month alone, which is just insane. China Unicom, on the other hand, added 1.15 million 3G and 4G users in December and China Telecom added 2 million of them in the same period. Since February 2014, China Mobile served 776 million subscribers, China Unicom 285.7 million and China Telecom 185 million subscribers.
There you have it, some Chinese statistics for those of you who are interested. China has a bunch of really good smartphone manufacturers, like Lenovo, Huawei, Xiaomi, Meizu, ZTE, etc. That’s a huge market and it will be interesting to see some of those companies expand to other parts of the world.
